Ooooohhhh I've BEEN WAITING for someone to write this!! I've honestly just dipped my little toe into content, and I had a moment thinking "is this ... An MLM?" 😂 But then I see creators out there genuinely teaching useful stuff, or entertaining and they're not trying to pawn off how much money they made selling a course that means you can make X amount of money too. Some creators definitely fall into it accidentally, striking while the iron is hot. We all need to make income! Just Glad it's YOU that wrote about it! On an unrelated note, will your skincare be available in France once you're ready to hit the shelves?
I loved your explanation with the Maslow’s pyramid of needs. It might explain why I felt a dip in my creativity and imagination when I transitioned from being a teen living with my parents (not having to worry about ensuring primary needs are being met) to living as an adult and having to take care of it yourself. You just fall down to the bottom of the pyramid again.
Yeah 🥲 and It can make you see the world in a different light, where people who are born into different circumstances are automatically not afforded the same experiences as other people in so many different levels. it's eye-opening!
Definitely. It was really insightful to read this, I’ve often heard creators talk about how much they earn and it blows my mind. Like really. All that studying I did, for what 🥹 but it’s amazing what has been achieved through social media.
This is so well explained. I had been feeling like I am in an episode of black mirror recently where more and more my fyp is telling me how to influence rather than just influencing. I feel like soon it could become so meta that we may even see the appearance of either a) new platforms dedicated to content creation / entrepreneurial influencing or b) new platforms that promise to avoid that kind of content.
To be honest, I think we might see both of those platforms and many iterations of them by different people! On the one hand, I understand it because I'm lucky to have started doing something like this a few years ago, so I can see all of its upsides. On the other hand, it just feels like we're breaking the fourth wall almost TOO much? I'm not sure. I'm all for transparency, but it's hard to envision where we're going to end up and if we'll like it.
I've been thinking about this too - I was at a brand hotel stay and realised that I couldn't actually afford to ever go there myself. But to my audience I was documenting it was "somewhere great" not really thinking about the fact it means they may add it to their wish list. The reality is social media and influencing shows the general public a world of luxury it was perfectly fine without. Spending £1000 on a hotel wasn't even *known* as an option, let alone paid.
It's so true. 99% of people would accept a nice hotel stay at a £1,000 a night hotel without thinking. I know I have probably done that in the past, but then, in reality, if I'm looking for hotels for my holiday, I wouldn't spend £1,000 a night. It's really hard to envision where we're going to end up and if we're going to like it.
Thank you, Natalie this was very refreshing. I just got back online about a year ago and was surprised at how much content is about making content or methods to make money. Thank you for spelling it out so clearly!
There is so much of this on substack right now and I have found in the healing/spiritual community (my world) a lot of people switching lanes to make money by becoming business coaches. It feels not exactly disingenuous but they’re making money by doing exactly what you said not using their methods as a healer. And with substack it’s not something that can necessarily be replicated just bc they did it. I don’t know if that made sense but thanks for naming this!

That mindset shift, once money frees up your headspace to think bigger, is so under-discussed, and you named it perfectly. Loved this one :)
Agreed, and thank you!

Yeah, it can all be very insane and overwhelming!! no problem
